The suspect who was killed in a shootout that injured four law enforcement officers in rural Kansas has been identified as a 22-year-old man — whose grandfather was also hurt in the melee, according to authorities.

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol responded to a family’s rural farmhouse for a “domestic disturbance” in Carbondale around 10:24 a.m. Saturday, after a woman at the home called 911, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

After arriving, cops encountered Stephen McMillan, 22, outside the property. A shootout then ensued between the suspect and officers, officials said.

“After being on scene for less than 10 minutes, gunfire erupted,” Col. Erik Smith, superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, told reporters during a news conference Saturday.

Three deputies and two KHP troopers fired their weapons during the incident, and were all hit by gunfire, investigators added.

McMillan was pronounced dead after he was struck in the shootout, according to the KBI.

The gunman’s grandfather, identified as a 77-year-old, also suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital, authorities said.

It is not immediately clear when McMillan’s grandfather was shot.

Two deputies from the Osage County Sheriff’s Office underwent surgery and are in good condition. The third deputy was discharged from the hospital, the KBI said in a Sunday update.

The KHP trooper who suffered a gunshot wound has also been released from the hospital, according to ABC News.

McMillan’s grandfather, whose name has not been released, is expected to recover from his injuries.

“Wonderful, strong Christian family. They’re just good people,” neighbor Heather Roberts told KSHB.

“I just would’ve never imagined him doing something like this,” she said of McMillan.

The investigation remains ongoing, and a motive for the shooting is not yet known.
