Injuries for the San Francisco 49ers continue to pile up before they are set to play the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7 on “Sunday Night Football.” The 49ers are leaning toward making Mac Jones the starting quarterback for the contest, as Brock Purdy was limited at practice on Wednesday and Thursday with a toe injury that has kept him from starting since Week 2.

On Thursday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a brief update on Valdes-Scantling, saying he needed to have an MRI for his calf.

“We sent him for an MRI,” Shanahan said, via 49ers Webzone. “I haven’t got the news back yet, but it’s something with his calf, which usually isn’t that good. But I don’t know exactly yet, but probably not going to have him this week.”

San Francisco didn’t have better news following the MRI. Per the 49ers, Valdes-Scantling was placed on injured reserve and will miss at least the next four games.

Via the 49ers:

“The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have placed WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling on the Injured Reserve list.

Valdes-Scantling (6-4, 206) originally signed to the team’s practice squad on August 28, 2025 and was later promoted to the active roster on September 3. He has appeared in five games with the team this season and registered four receptions for 40 yards (10.0 average).”

Moore, Jennings and Watkins were limited participants at Thursday’s practice, a good sign that they should be available to play the Falcons on Sunday night. Pearsall did not participate in practice on Wednesday or Thursday, a bad sign for his prospects against Atlanta.

San Francisco is still without star receiver Brandon Ayiuk, recovering from a season-ending knee injury in 2024.

Sunday night’s contest is an important one for San Francisco. The 49ers enter the contest in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC West with a 4-2 record.
