A 500-pound man was battling for his life after falling into a huge hole in California.

The 40-year-old, who has not been named, plunged 15 feet into a 4-foot diameter gap at a construction site in Pomona at around 1 P.M. on Wednesday.

He did not work on the site and it is unclear why he was there or how he fell in.

The Los Angeles Fire Department told the California Post it took 40 firefighters to rescue him and he was pulled out by his arms.

Firefighters deployed their urban search and rescue team, which performed a trench rescue that took at least two hours, according to ABC7.

A rescuer secured him with a harness and a hoist tied to a tow truck with a crane, said Keith Navarre, public information officer for the LAFD.

Videos show the man being hoisted up with arms held up. He was alert and talking to rescuers when rescued, Sky 5 reported.

A helicopter also had to be deployed to pick up a hospital emergency response team to render any needed aid on site, Navarre added.

“A lot of resources were used on that call,” he said. “Any time there is a confined space, it’s difficult.”

The man was taken to the Pomona Valley Medical Center on advanced life support. It’s unclear on what his condition is now.
