Wordle has had a grip on the internet ever since its release to the public in October 2021.
To play the game, users must guess the daily five-letter words within six attempts before the answer is revealed, though it can be quite tricky to solve.
However, Wordle creator Josh Wardle told Newsweek in January 2022—the same month The New York Times acquired the game—that he’s “not very good at it.”
“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning,” Wardle said at the time, explaining that “she will consistently get it in three goes,” while he normally needs “at least 4 or 5 attempts.”
Although the software engineer said he’s “reluctant to tell anybody how they should play,” he did offer up one piece of advice to players: “A lot of people tend to think that the game is just about finding those green and gold letters. If you get those, then you theoretically have the information you need, but you don’t want to get too hung up on that.”
So what exactly is it that makes Wordle so popular? Erhan Aslan, associate professor of applied linguistics at the University of Reading in England, previously told Newsweek: “I think that Wordle gains its popularity not only from its simple rules but also from its virality on social media platforms as a result of people sharing/posting their scores to demonstrate a sense of accomplishment and validation.”
“Before the digital age, word puzzle games, particularly crossword puzzles, would usually appear in newspapers and magazines,” Aslan said. “People would do them while waiting for the bus or train, in the toilet, or just to kill time.”
