Skattebo’s potential debut on Thursday night comes as a bit of a shock. Lately, Skattebo has missed a lot of time as he’s been dealing with a hamstring injury.
Throughout the Giants’ first two games of action, Skattebo was sidelined. He missed several training camp sessions, which put his Week 1 status in jeopardy.
Recently, a Giants Insider had a not-so-promising update on Skattebo’s chances of being ready for the start of the regular season.
“Probably not going to make it,” Giants Insider Jordan Raanan said late last week.
Then, Skattebo made a surprising return to training camp on Wednesday afternoon, which was a positive sign for the rookie. Suddenly, he’s in line to take the field for Thursday’s matchup against the New England Patriots.
Skattebo’s chances of getting a heavy workload are unlikely. As he’s been out of the mix more often than not, the Giants are likely to remain cautious with the rookie running back, as they look to avoid any major setbacks.
The former Arizona State star could play an important role in the Giants’ backfield this season. He might not be a starter, but he has seemingly shown enough to be a part of the rotation.
Skattebo entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick. He started his NCAA run at Sacramento State before moving to ASU in 2023. During his first season at Arizona State, Skattebo took on 164 carries for 783 yards and nine touchdowns. He also caught 24 passes for 286 yards and one touchdown.
During his final year, Skattebo started all 13 games. He took on 293 carries for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns. Skattebo caught 45 passes for 605 yards. By the end of the 2024 NCAA season, Skattebo was credited with being a First-Team All-American and First-Team All-Big-12.
