In what is beginning to become an everyday occurrence, the New York Yankees are being called out for several defensive miscues.
Saturday, the calling out was done by Yankees TV play-by-play broadcaster Michael Kay. Kay had harsh words for the team during the top of the ninth inning.
“It can’t get much worse than this,” Kay said. “Quite frankly, the Yankees are getting schooled by the Red Sox.”
Kay’s comments came on the heels of a seven-run ninth inning from the Boston that turned a manageable 5-1 deficit into a 12-1 blowout in a short amount of time. The inning included an error from shortstop Anthony Volpe, who is now tied for the major league lead in errors.
Kay has been extremely critical of manager Aaron Boone and New York’s sloppy play throughout the season. He recently called out Boone for managerial decisions and claimed that the Yankees lacked any sense of urgency.
New York’s lack of urgency has shown throughout the weekend, as it will now enter Sunday looking to avoid a sweep from its division rival. The Yankees had more errors (five) than they did runs (four) in the first three games of their series against the Red Sox, a truly embarrassing stat for one of baseball’s most prestigious organizations.
What once looked like a dominant season from the Bronx Bombers is now headed toward an ultimate collapse.
A failure to reach the postseason should undoubtedly result in the firing of Boone and a new manager should be hired to lead the next chapter of Yankees baseball.
