The trick-or-treating schedule has been changed in several places in the U.S., largely as a result of weather concerns.
In most cases, trick-or-treaters will be able to still enjoy the holiday–just a day late.
Why It Matters
Going from house to house for candy is a tradition associated with Halloween, but weather or other events can make it unsafe for children, leading to the trick-or-treating adjustments.
What To Know
Ohio
The mayor of Avon decided to move the city’s trick-or-treating to Thursday instead of on Halloween.
“I thought making the decision early would help,” Mayor Bryan Jensen told WJW in Cleveland. “That didn’t work. There are people still calling me today who are livid about the change.”
The update to trick-or-treating time was made to avoid a conflict with high school football playoff games.
Pennsylvania
Several towns in Pennsylvania have rescheduled trick-or-treating because of weather concerns.
The following areas have moved the festivities to Saturday, November 1, from 6 to 8 p.m.:
- East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County
- Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County
- Wormleysburg Borough, Cumberland County
Iowa
The city of Waukon announced that trick-or-treating will be moved to 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday because of several high school sports events on Friday night.
New Jersey
Toms River usually celebrates Halloween with trick-or-treating on October 30 to allow for the parade on Halloween. But the township rescheduled trick-or-treating to Saturday because of a storm.
“On November 1, because that way people can still attend the parade. They don’t have to deal with this crummy weather,” Toms River business administrator Jonathan Salonis told WCBS in New York City. “And the mayor is very concerned about the safety of our children and their experience for Halloween.”
The parade will occur, rain or shine, at 7 p.m. Friday.
What Happens Next
Most children in the affected towns should still be able to celebrate Halloween with trick-or-treating, but the timeline will be slightly different.
