A lighthearted but viral conspiracy theory circulating on TikTok has fans asking whether Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet could secretly be living a double life as U.K. drill rapper EsDeeKid.
Although based on little more than a series of coincidences and creative fan speculation, the theory has gained traction online, prompting side-by-side comparisons, accent analysis and even fashion clues.
The buzz began with TikTok creators, like @stefano_vass, began posting videos noting that both Chalamet and EsDeeKid had been seen wearing the same patterned bandanna.
The clip from @stefano_vass on November 15 was captioned “this conspiracy theory is crazy.” The short video has garnered more than 566,000 likes and over 5.7 million views to date, fueling widespread commentary.
A different post from user @gothauntie0 added: “That rapper…I believe may be Timothée Chalamet. I have no hard evidence on this. All I have is speculation.”
Her post, captioned, “the mystery of the century,” reached over 1.5 million views and more than 203,000 likes in days.
The rapper in question, EsDeeKid, is an anonymous artist who emerged on the U.K. music scene in 2024 and whose real identity remains unknown. He is known for tracks like “Phantom” and “LV Sandals,” and regularly performs wearing a balaclava, making visual identification virtually impossible. He reportedly hails from Liverpool, northwestern England, and raps with a distinct Scouse [from Liverpool] accent.
The theory linking Chalamet to EsDeeKid hinges on several tenuous connections.
Chalamet once went viral for his high-school rap performances under the name “Lil Timmy Tim,” showing off an early interest in hip-hop. He is also known for being quirky and highly capable with accents and languages, as seen in his film roles.
Supporters of the theory have pointed to Chalamet’s appearance at a Fakemink concert in London—a frequent EsDeeKid collaborator—as suspicious.
“Why would he take time out of his day to go to that?” @gothauntie0 asked in her post, noting that it was far removed from the actor’s usual social scene and that he appears too busy for such random outings.
Fans have also highlighted the shared “double ‘ee’” in both “Timothée” and “EsDeeKid,” as well as the visual similarity of their eyes.
Other observers have been skeptical. Some commenters noted that Chalamet does not speak with a Liverpudlian accent, which is a prominent feature of EsDeeKid’s music. Still, others said that the actor’s skill with dialects could allow him to mimic the accent convincingly if he wanted to.
Even if unfounded, the rumor fits Chalamet’s reputation for theatricality.
Newsweek reached out to Timothee Chalamet’s team via email on Thursday for more information.
