The world was rocked by “Godzilla Minus One,” which erupted onto the world in 2023. The film from Toho was released in Japan on November 3, 2023, and on December 1, 2023, in the United States.
On a reported budget of $10-15 million, the film brought in $116 million at the worldwide box office. Even more impressive is it became one of the most popular “Godzilla” films ever made, landing the first-ever Academy Award for a film in the franchise, and the first-ever Japanese language film to be nominated for Best Visual Effects. It would win the award, leading to many asking when there would be a sequel.
“Godzilla Minus Zero” was announced and now has a release date. The sequel was announced in November 2025, and it will head back to the theaters on November 6, 2026.
Takashi Yamazaki wrote, directed, and led the VFX on the first film, and he is back as writer/director/VFX on this new sequel.
There is not much known about the sequel, but it is likely to continue the powerful story that was in “Godzilla Minus One.” The film follows kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima. Shikishima returns home to find that his parents were killed in a WWII bombing.
Shikishima then befriends a woman who is taking care of a child, whose parents were also killed. While Japan is recovering, Godzilla emerges and causes chaos in an already destroyed Japan. Shikishima then joins a council and group that devises a plan to stop the Kaiju from destroying what little they have.
“Godzilla Minus Zero” is likely to follow the same pattern, in a post-WWII recovery for the country, as Godzilla might emerge again. The ending of the first film saw the “destruction” of the monster, only for him to start his regeneration.
Considering the first film had incredible visuals and an equally impressive story, it is believed that the sequel will draw even more fans to theaters.
Toho is the originator of the Godzilla character, which was initially released in 1954. Multiple films have emerged in the franchise, including the new ones that are made by Warner Bros. Toho licenses out the character, which has led to the ever-popular “Godzilla vs. Kong” franchise, though they have nothing to do with one another.
Either way, the latest Toho-produced venture will be released in November.
