Snow-loving New Yorkers are coming up with out-of-the-box ideas for makeshift-sleds as the city faces a major shortage leading up to Winter Storm Fern that is set to hit by Sunday.
The five boroughs could be blanketed in up to one-foot of snow by Monday, causing the popular plastic-sled — loved by children and adults alike — to fly off shelves across the city, and sell out online.
If you’re lucky to score one of the most coveted items in NYC right now, basic models of the plastic-sled can be found at local hardware stores for $15, while more durable models can be found on Amazon for around $40-85.
One frantic New Yorker on the Upper West Side desperate to get their hands on a sled, put an urgent call out to Reddit asking locals where they could purchase a sled leading up to the highly-anticipated snowfall, claiming they are “STRESSED” and are “NOT GOING ANOTHER SNOWSTORM WITHOUT A GOOD SLED.”
Users in the thread quickly shared frustration that many big box stores and online sites are completely sold out sleds, with delivery on Amazon not likely until the end of next week — causing many users to put on their creative hats to come up with a makeshift solution to enjoy the snow-covered hills across the city.
Some users suggested “going old school” and to “borrow” a lunch tray from a school or fast food eateries like McDonald’s — with another going to suggest nabbing a tray from the popular Katz’s Delicatessen, before quickly noting that it might not be possible as they now have a “security guy at the door.”
Many users wrote that the classic cardboard-box-makeshift-sled will do — with others suggesting to the desperate Reddit user to simply swipe a trash-can lid to enjoy snowy hills.
Winter-loving residents brave enough to face the cold will be taking their sleds — or make-shift versions — to hills in parks across the five boroughs, but if you have the need for speed, you can try your hand for a cash $50 prize in a sledding competition scheduled on Sunday in Central Park at 3 p.m.
