The New York Yankees started full-squad workouts on Monday, and Aaron Judge got to take some at-bats against No. 2 prospect Carlos Lagrange.
Videos posted of live batting practice by SNY showed Judge hitting a home run off Lagrange, but also striking out on a 102.6 mph fastball. Lagrange showed why he is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, but Judge also showed why he is one of the best hitters in the sport. The three-time MVP spoke on Lagrange in a press conference.
“He’s impressive. I’ve seen a lot of videos. I’ve heard a lot of stories about him over the years, from just kind of being in the organization. He’s going to be special. You can look up at the radar and see 103 mph, but I think it’s also just the presence he has on the mound. We set up some nasty lineups against him today, and he didn’t care. He wanted to be out there, and he came right after us.”
Judge was not the only former Most Valuable Player Lagrange faced off against on Monday. He also struck out Cody Bellinger during live batting practice.
Lagrange is a consensus top 100 prospect and the top pitching prospect in the organization. He is only 22 years old and has reached Double-A. He had 168 strikeouts across two levels last season. At 6-foot-7, he throws a fastball, slider, and changeup. He surprisingly does not get too much extension, but has the stuff to dominate batters.
