And Just Like That newcomer Jonathan Cake has thoughts about the timing of showrunner Michael Patrick King announcing the series will end with season 3.

“Wait, did i JUST KILL @justlikethatmax ?” Cake, who joined the show’s third and final season as mysterious British writer Duncan Reeves, captioned an Instagram post on Monday, August 4. “Duncan finally has one night of passion with Carrie Bradshaw and the shows over…FOREVER??? Was it, judging by this picture, his surprisingly small head? Or something else a little underwhelming?”

Cake, 57, shared a screenshot of himself as Duncan shirtless in bed after hooking up with Sarah Jessica Parker‘s Carrie. He also included a photo of Parker, 60, seemingly taken on set.

“Ah Duncan Donuts, i guess America won’t run on Duncan, but it was exquisite pleasure while it lasted. @cynthiaenixon @iamkristindavis @melfijohn, my once and future King, Michael Patrick- and the one and only ever sjp , you gave the world SUCH joy for nearly thirty years. I don’t think there’s a higher calling for people in our business,” the actor continued. “You knocked it out of the park and it’s still traveling, traveling, traveling. Thank you for having me on your team for a hot- a very hot- minute. You’re all brilliant.”

Throughout season 3, which premiered in May, fans watched Carrie’s connection with Duncan transform from feuding neighbors to trusted proofreaders of each other’s latest works. Following Carrie’s split from Aidan (John Corbett), she gave into her flirtation with Duncan, and the pair shared a steamy night together before he eventually returned to London.

The characters took their relationship out of the friend zone during the Thursday, July 31, episode — just one day before news broke that the Sex and the City spinoff would not return for a fourth season.

“And just like that … the ongoing storytelling of the Sex And The City universe is coming to an end. While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That season three, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop,” read King’s statement, shared via Instagram on Friday, August 1. “Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12.”

King, 70, explained why fans didn’t find out about the ending sooner. “SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season,” he wrote. “It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.”

Along with Parker, the spinoff brought back Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis as their beloved SATC characters, Miranda and Charlotte. (Kim Cattrall, who rounded out the original friend group as Samantha, only briefly appeared on season 2 of AJLT.)

Following King’s announcement, Parker shared a lengthy Instagram tribute to her journey in the SATC universe. “Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all,” she wrote on Friday. “I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion. Therefore the most sentimental and profound gratitude and lifetime of debt. To you all.”

And Just Like That airs on HBO Max Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
