Gaza ceasefire talks are continuing in Egypt, with delegations from Israel, the US and Hamas meeting to discuss a pathway to peace in the region and Israel and the US try to finalise a deal based on US President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan.

The talks coincide with the two-year anniversary of the Hamas massacre in Israel that killed 1200 people and took another 250 captive. Israel’s ensuing invasion of Gaza following October 7 resulted in the deaths of 67,000 people, and was labelled a genocide in a landmark United Nations inquiry last month.

Hundreds have gathered at the former site of the Nova music festival in southern Israel to commemorate the anniversary of the tragedy.

Israel and Hamas have made “progress” in the first two days of talks, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told CNN.

Trump said he is optimistic about the negotiations, and told reporters at the White House yesterday that he thinks “there’s a possibility we could have peace in the Middle East”.
