The Toronto Blue Jays still have some big decisions to make this offseason, specifically in regard to Bo Bichette’s future. He is a free agent, and the Blue Jays may not see him as their top priority.
The Blue Jays are reportedly interested in Kyle Tucker. Tucker has reportedly already visited the Blue Jays’ facility in Florida, and some experts believe the Blue Jays will not be able to sign both Tucker and Bichette. If that is true, the Blue Jays will focus on Tucker first. If they can land him, they would need to shift their focus to alternative options for the infield.
After spending big on Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, Tyler Rogers and Tucker in this case, the Blue Jays may want a low-risk, high-reward option to play in the infield. According to MLB insider Francys Romero, the Blue Jays are showing early interest in Yoán Moncada.
“Several teams, including the (Los Angeles) Angels, (Pittsburgh) Pirates, (Chicago) White Sox, and Blue Jays, have shown early interest in free-agent third baseman Yoan Moncada, per sources,” wrote Romero on X on Friday. “Despite thumb and knee issues, Moncada had a solid 2025 and could contribute even more next season among third basemen.”
Moncada has played just 96 games in the last two years. In 2024, he missed most of the year with back and hip injuries. He has not played in at least 100 games since 2022. Moncada posted a .783 OPS in 84 games last season. He hit 12 home runs, perhaps giving teams hope that he can be a contributor if he stays healthy.
The reality is, the Blue Jays are likely doing their homework on options in case they lose Bichette. It is unclear whether Bichette will wait around for the Blue Jays to decide on him or Tucker. The Blue Jays need a backup plan, and Moncada seems to be a name on their list.
