Two bodies, believed to be a Brisbane couple who went missing in Tasmania, have been found by authorities near a crashed car.

Leannedra Kang and Takahiro Toya, who had been in the St Helens and Scamander area in the state’s north-east, had been scheduled to fly from Launceston home to Brisbane on Wednesday.

But the pair, both aged in their 20s, did not board their flight or return their rental car, police said.

About 5.30pm on Friday, the car, a Toyota Corolla, was found submerged in water off Tebrakunna Road, and the pair were found nearby a short time later.

“At this early stage, it appears they were travelling over a bridge when the vehicle has left the roadway and ended up in the water,” police inspector Luke Manhood said.

“This is a tragic outcome, and our thoughts are with their families and loved ones.

“Our initial investigations suggest there are no suspicious circumstances, but further forensic examinations will now take place, as is the usual process, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”
