The truth did not set him free.
A California motorist was arrested hours into the New Year after he told a police officer he was the “DUI” for the night — rather than the “DD” in an apparent slip of the tongue, according to bodycam footage from the traffic stop.
The male driver, who was not identified by authorities, was charged with a DUI last Wednesday by Murrieta police as he struggled to find the right words and stumbled his way through a field sobriety test that was all captured on tape.
After a police officer told the suspect to pull over as part of a DUI probe and asked him where he was coming from, the motorist foolishly said, “I was just dropping off my friend because I’m the DUI tonight,” according to the video that was posted on social media by the department.
“You’re the DUI tonight?” the officer skeptically asked.
“Yes sir,” the driver replied without a second thought.
“Do you mean to say the DD?” the officer asked, using the acronym for designated driver — leaving the motorist speechless.
Leading up to the stop, the driver was allegedly swerving across the roadway, authorities said.
As the traffic stop progressed, cops said the driver admitted to drinking alcohol, including “a beer and some champagne a couple hours ago.”
He also appeared unsteady as he attempted to complete field sobriety tests that authorities said he ultimately failed.
After the officer is heard on video telling the suspected impaired driver he needs to be placed under arrest, the motorist put up a brief protest, claiming he was only two minutes from his destination.
And when asked if he knew someone’s phone number to give them a call, he again appeared to mix up phrases.
“I don’t off my heart,” he said, according to the footage.
