Paramount is no longer planning for a second season of Dexter: Original Sin despite initially renewing the show for more episodes.

News broke on Friday, August 22, that Dexter: Original Sin has been on hiatus and there are no plans to shoot a second season, according to Variety. Sources told the outlet that no production dates were scheduled since the show wrapped up its first season in February.

Paramount has shifted its focus to Michael C. Hall‘s Dexter spinoff titled Dexter: Resurrection, which will imminently open a writers room for a potential season 2. While the show hasn’t been renewed yet, the chances are strong based on high viewership ahead of the first season finale.

The decision to not proceed with Dexter: Original Sin — which starred Patrick Gibson, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Christian Slater, Alex Shimizu, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Dempsey and Reno Wilson — comes after the closing of the Skydance-Paramount merger. Variety noted that an insider confirmed to them that President of Television at Skydance Media Matt Thunell and the new senior leadership team are assessing Paramount’s entire programming slate. They subsequently chose to focus on Resurrection as a way to continue with the Dexter franchise.

Hall, 54, has been playing the role of the fictional serial killer since the OG Dexter series aired on Showtime’s series from 2006 to 2013. He later returned to TV screens as Dexter in a 2021 spinoff titled New Blood, which ended just one year later.

While Hall’s character died on screen, the creative team found a way to work around that in order to bring to life a prequel and a spinoff. Showrunner Clyde Phillips later explained to The Hollywood Reporter in December 2024 that Dexter: Resurrection should be seen as “the next season” following Dexter: New Blood. Dexter: Original Sin would come first, since it shows exactly how Dexter originally became a serial killer.

Dexter: Original Sin, which premiered in December 2024, was set in the ’90s and focused on Dexter’s transition from student to avenging serial killer and unsuspecting member of the Miami Metro Police Department

“We watch that evolution of the Dexter character grow into the version played by Michael C. Hall that we love, and Patrick Gibson absolutely nails it. When you see Patrick Gibson, you’ll understand — this kid’s a star. Get out of the way,” Phillips exclusively told Us Weekly at the time.

Phillips noted that Original Sin would introduce viewers to a different version of Dexter.

“When we first met Dexter in the OG show, he was 35 years old. Fully formed, Michael C. Hall. Kills a guy in the first minute of the show. Lives with a woman. Now we meet Dexter, he’s a senior in college. Never kissed a girl,” he shared. “Doesn’t know how to kiss his own sister. He’s developing his own independence, learning how to blend in, and building a stronger relationship with his father, Harry, played by Christian Slater.”

In a separate interview with Us, Gibson, 29, opened up about taking over for Hall, saying, “I feel like Dexter exists in this kind of moral gray area — he’s a serial killer that we root for. To me — watching it — I felt like I really am on this guy’s side but it makes me question my own beliefs. And in this day and age, with social media and things like that, things have become quite binary. So for this character to exist at this time is quite relevant.”

Dexter: Resurrection is available to stream on Paramount+ Fridays and airs on Showtime Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
