The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for a Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. While the Eagles won 24-20 against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, it wasn’t a dominating performance.
The offense especially struggled, as that unit couldn’t muster up any big plays. Quarterback Jalen Hurts finished the game 19-of-23, but he threw for only 152 yards.
Most of his passes went to the tight ends and running backs, as only seven of his completions went to receivers. Star receiver A.J. Brown was non-existent, as he had one catch for eight yards on one target. With that performance, Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd suggested the Eagles could trade their receiver, potentially even to the Chiefs.
Now, according to NFL insider Dianna Russini, there were multiple NFL teams that reached out to the Eagles during the off-season trying to acquire him.
Having teams reach out is one thing, as that happens all the time. However, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was defiant in the off-season that the team wouldn’t trade him.
When it comes to the Eagles, there is no denying what the identity of the offense is. It starts with Saquon Barkley, Hurts and the offensive line imposing their will and eventually wearing the defense out. In the Week 1 game against the Cowboys, the Eagles had the ball for 61 plays. They ran the ball on 38 of those plays.
Coach Nick Sirianni and Hurts have come out and said that Brown is going to be much more involved in Week 2 against the Chiefs. With how teams do less in the preseason now more than ever, the first game of the season has become more of a feeling out process and getting into a flow.
Playing that type of game against a division rival that knows how you play can make it an ugly performance.
Up next is a Chiefs secondary that was dominated in Week 1 by Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ offense. Herbert threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, and he had receivers running open the entire day.
For now, everybody in the Eagles organization is saying the right thing. If Brown goes out and has a big game against the Chiefs, then this will be nothing more than rumors. However, another bad game where he doesn’t put up big numbers, and the rumors could continue to swirl.
