Nina Dobrev’s latest TikTok video has fans wondering whether she’s throwing shade at her broken engagement to Shaun White.
“If you want it, take it, I should have said it before,” Dobrev, 36, lip-synched to Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” in a Thursday, November 13, video, while holding up her middle finger.
As the actress mouthed, “Tried to hide it, fake it, I can’t pretend anymore,” she put down her middle finger and flashed her now-bare ring finger.
Dobrev and White, 39, had gotten engaged in October 2024 after four years together. Us confirmed in September that the pair had called off their engagement.
While neither the Vampire Diaries alum nor White have spoken publicly about what went wrong, fans have theorized that Dobrev’s Thursday upload was a dig at the Olympian.
“You were always too hot for him,” one social media user commented, while another added, “She’s been glowing since that relationship ended.”
A third TikToker wrote, “Switching from the middle finger to the ring finger is iconic lol.”
Another fan added, “You are too much of a baddie to have dealt with someone who did not value you. So glad you see your worth.”
Others, meanwhile, jokingly compared Dobrev’s video to her The Vampire Diaries character, Elena Gilbert, “turning off her humanity.” (In the TVD universe, bloodthirsty vampires can switch off their humanity to kill victims without remorse.)
“Her humanity is completely off,” a TikTok user replied, with another adding, “Miss ma’am I’ma [sic] need you to tap into your Katherine Pierce [Elena’s doppelganger] era again. Give ‘em all hell.”
Dobrev, for her part, has not clarified the meaning of her TikTok video, though a source previously told Us Weekly how she had been affected by the breakup.
“Nina is devastated,” a source told Us in September. “They had finally started planning the wedding and things were in motion.”
According to the insider, Dobrev was being “supported by her closest girlfriends” in the split aftermath.
A second source, meanwhile, told Us that infidelity did not play a part in the breakup.
“There was no cheating at all during the course of their five-and-a-half-year relationship,” the second insider told Us at the time. “They were very loyal to each other. Any online speculation that suggests otherwise is ridiculous.”
Both Dobrev and White have also appeared to be finding solace in their respective careers following the breakup.
“I’ll be running around, definitely supporting my friends competing and just taking it in,” White said on the September 16 episode of Today, discussing the 2026 Olympics in Milan. “This will be my first Winter Olympics where I’m not competing, so a lot of feelings there, but honestly, I’m excited to support and check it out.”
He added, “My first Olympics was in Italy that I competed at, so this is bringing a lot of memories going back to Italy. Should be fun.”
Before calling off their engagement, Dobrev had been candid about her marriage plans with White.
“I really want to enjoy it and not rush that process,” Dobrev told E! News in March. “We’re just enjoying being engaged at this point and being in that sort of phase because a lot of your life is — you have a boyfriend for half of your life and then you have a husband for half of your life, but the fiancé period is very short. It’s so fun to say fiancé.”
