A couple in their 70s and their teenage grandson have been rescued from a unit fire in the Gold Coast’s south on the weekend, after patrolling police officers noticed smoke coming from the building.

Police said the patrolling officers noticed smoke coming from the rear of a second-floor unit on Golden Four Drive, in Tugun, shortly before 1am on Sunday, and stopped to investigate.

In bodycam footage released by Queensland Police today, one of the officers grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out a fire on the balcony, while the other can be heard saying the unit was “completely engulfed in smoke”.

The pair entered the building, finding a 76-year-old man, his 77-year-old wife – who the officers helped out in a wheelchair – and their 14-year-old grandson.

“There’s a fire, your washing machine is on fire,” one of the officers said to the couple, who appeared to have woken up a short time before.

Additional officers arrived on-scene, as well as firefighters and paramedics, who assessed officers and the residents for smoke inhalation.

Police said the fire was not being treated as suspicious, with the fire department suspecting it was caused by electrical equipment.
