When the Pittsburgh Steelers get rid of a player, it’s typically for a reason. That was the case with George Pickens, who was often seen doing things on the field that weren’t necessary.

Whether it was arguing with referees, pushing teammates around, or simply being disengaged, Pickens was a bit lost at times in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers sent him to the Dallas Cowboys in a trade during this past offseason, and it looks like it might’ve been one of the worst deals in the NFL last summer.

On the season, Pickens already has 607 yards in seven games, including 36 receptions and six touchdowns. He already has the most touchdowns of his career, and is well on pace to break his 1,140-yard season in 2023.

For a Steelers offense that’s looking for a wide receiver, there has to be some regret.

And according to former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch, many of Pickens’ problems in Pittsburgh weren’t just his fault.

In fact, he went as far as to say that Matt Canada, the former Steelers offensive coordinator, is among the worst in the history of the NFL.

“They paired George Pickens up with arguably the worst coordinator [Matt Canada] in the history of the NFL,” Batch said on “Up and Adams.” “And I’m not throwing shade. The numbers are what they are. So [Pickens] lost more games in Pittsburgh than he ever lost in his career. And he had a bad rap, and he didn’t know how to lose. And I’m okay with that.

“… Now you’re seeing him showcase in an offense that are now throwing the football around on what his skills are. Ultimately, he’s going to get a huge contract, whether that’s in Dallas or somewhere else, because this guy can flat-out play.”

It’s tough to say that Pickens and the Steelers would be the perfect relationship still, given that the Steelers are still playing good football.

However, if Pittsburgh doesn’t go out and add a competent wide receiver to its receiver group, that trade will look a bit worse if the Steelers can’t get the job done when it matters most.
