Forrest Place in the heart of Perth’s CBD was full on Sunday as a big crowd joined national pro-Palestine marches, days after a peak hunger monitor declared half a million people had been hit by famine in Gaza.

The rally was one of several organised in major cities and towns across Australia, and came after the organisers – Palestinian Action Group – organised a march of about 100,000 people across the Sydney Harbour Bridge earlier this month.

Organisers said the bridge march had generated momentum around the country.

Friends of Palestine WA organiser Nick Everett said people across the nation were standing up and saying “enough”.

In Western Australia, marches were planned for Perth, Geraldton, Bridgetown, Margaret River, Karratha, Denmark, Albany, Broome and Bunbury, according the organisers.

“Our government cannot claim to support human rights while continuing to arm an apartheid regime,” Everett said.

“Trade unions, civil society, and communities across the country are united in calling for action. Palestine can’t wait.”

Speakers slated to address crowds across the nation included high-profile activist Grace Tame and journalist Antoinette Lattouf, while Senator David Pocock addressed the crowd in Canberra.
