Retrograde meaning
Retrograde is a bit of a misnomer, as planets do not move backward in space; they merely slow their orbital motion, a deceleration that appears to be a reversal from our vantage point here on beautiful, yet broken, planet Earth.
Aside from the Sun and the Moon, all the other luminaries in our solar system go retrograde at various times. Because Mercury is in close proximity to the Earth, it is considered a personal planet, meaning its movements and, in particular, its retrograde antics affect us in an apparent and immediate way.

Mercury retrograde dates
From November 9 to 19, Mercury will retrograde in Sagittarius, bringing returns, revisions, and challenges in learning, education, planning, strategizing, and travel.
From November 19 to 29, Mercury shifts into Scorpio and shifts our focus to themes of power, profit, control, and finances.
When does Mercury go into retrograde in 2025
Mercury stationed retrograde on November 9. While the planet stations direct on November 29, it won’t clear its post-retrograde shadow until December 17.

We often hear about Mercury retrograde and how many things can come back to us during this period. But why does this happen?
“Mercury symbolizes our thoughts, information, conversations, acquaintances, discussions, and small everyday matters. It influences how we think, speak, and what we talk about,” Polina Arutiunian, astrologer and spiritual advisor at Nebula, told The Post.
Mercury retrograde relationships
She notes that since ancient times, astrologers have observed that when a planet begins to retrograde, events bring our consciousness toward themes symbolized by that planet.
Because Mercury rules communication and exchange, and retrogrades emphasize the prefix re: revisit, revise, remember, return, etc. Arutiunian shared that this is a prime time to address what is lacking in the story we tell ourselves about ourselves and in our discourse and dealings with others.

Arutiunian notes that for Aries folks, this Mercury retrograde period may shift their focus from the abstract to the concrete.
“You may need to put your dreams and new goals on hold to complete and follow through on current projects. You may face important matters, information, or news related to business, personal activities, and financial matters.”
She shares that the people of the ram may need to rethink their approach to labor and finances: is the juice worth the squeeze, and are you building true wealth, both tangible and intangible, or are you getting by on the mediocre minimum?
For team Taurus, this retrograde cycle activates their eighth house of intimacy and shared resources and their seventh house of trusted alliances.
“Old questions, conversations, or news related to partnerships, marriage, and relationships may resurface. During this period, reassess your relationships with others – this is a wonderful opportunity to change what previously troubled you in any relationship,” said Arutiunian

Arutiunian shared that Geminis will experience this retrograde as a season of severance in service of their greater good.
“This is a time to let go of certain relationships and concentrate on health, well-being, and personal routines. Geminis may revisit old ideas and thoughts about how to improve their daily rituals to feel better. Health-related news or information may also return.”
Time to sweep the temple floors of your body and shut the door on blasphemers.
Great news for the crab contingent, Arutiunian notes that you can expect to downshift from productivity to pleasure.
“During this period, it’s important for Cancers to set aside routine undertakings and give themselves over to fun. This Mercury retrograde period can bring the most joy and pleasure. You may receive invitations to holidays you may have forgotten about, and you can also expect the return of old romances and affairs.”
The choice to let the old barking dogs of love back in will be yours, but regardless of whether you entertain a reunion with an ex, revisiting your shared past will help you see how much you’ve grown since you parted ways.
Big cats will see their focus shift from flights of fancy to family and foundational matters.
“You may revisit issues and updates related to housing and real estate, Leo. Perhaps the idea of taking a trip or moving, or an important conversation with a family member, will return to you. You might also initiate such a conversation, and Mercury retrograde is favorable for this,” said Arutiunian.
As retrogrades support the prefix “re” in all its myriad forms, now may be the hour for a long-overdue reconciliation with a family member. Remember, Leo, the act of forgiveness is not you submitting to an enemy but surrendering to your higher self.
Symbolized in the Major Arcana by the Hermit card, Arutiunian said this retrograde is a summons to Virgo to come out of their cave/shell/root cellar and feel the sun on their faces and the equally warm sensation of human connection.
“It’s important to focus on learning, completing significant informational tasks, and finalizing important documents or transportation issues. You may reconnect with old acquaintances, useful contacts, and past opportunities to learn, take a course, or travel.”
Hit the road and turn your ringer back on.
For Libra, this retrograde cycle is about managing finances and the balance between saving and spending.
This period is a great opportunity to revisit old financial matters and reassess your earnings, spending, or savings. You might reconsider past purchase ideas, or a new opportunity could arise to acquire something you’ve long desired. This is the time for getting your finances in order, so make the most of it!,” said Arutiunian.
When considering the thing you’ve long desired, reflect on whether having it or wanting it will yield greater satisfaction.
“During this period, you’re literally returning to yourself, Scorpio, revisiting past ideas for new endeavors,” said Arutiunian.
“You may re-evaluate ideas and thoughts about changes to your appearance and physical body, perhaps reigniting an interest in sports and physical activity. Expect to hear updates about your work projects and startups; use this time to refine them.”
It is not only acceptable but encouraged for scorpions to be a little insular, secretive, and self-centric during this retrograde. Whatever you’re brewing/birthing, hold it close until it is ready to be released.
“For Sagittarius, this period brings you back to past dreams and goals, allowing you to immerse yourself in self-reflection and inner work,” said Arutiunian.
“It’s especially helpful to cleanse old dependencies and discard things that no longer serve you. Sagittarius may also experience the return of old creative ideas, inspiration, and insights that can be channeled into your work.”
For Capricorns, this Mercury retrograde may be something of a reunion special.
“Sea goats may reconnect with old friends, companies, and communities. They might also receive important information about close relationships via catching up with friends or finally having meaningful conversations that have been postponed,” said Arutiunian.
She encourages the Cap contingent to accept invitations of all kinds and use this time to thoughtfully reconnect with those who truly elevate them.
“For Aquarians, this is a time to reevaluate long-term goals and plans, especially regarding career and social development,” said Arutiunian.
She warned that issues and challenges may surface at work with authority figures or at home with key elders.
“Some Aquarians might also experience renewed opportunities in immigration matters, obtaining foreign documents, or long-distance relocation and travel.”
“During this period, it is crucial for Pisces to change their focus away from work and career to their true dreams, goals, and desires,” said Arutiunian.
“Pisces may encounter renewed opportunities to pursue their dreams. Mercury retrograde may also prompt Pisces to reexamine their dreams and values; perhaps they’re no longer relevant, and it’s time to develop new ones that truly matter.”
