Vanderbilt transfer Jaylen Carey missed a potential go-ahead jumper as Tennessee lost 62-60 in an ACC/SEC Challenge matchup at Syracuse on Tuesday night. The Volunteers battled back from a nine-point deficit in the second half and took their last lead with 4:20 remaining. Carey came off the bench for 22 points and nine rebounds while freshman Nate Ament scored 11 points and Maryland transfer Ja’Kobi Gillespie finished with 10 points and seven assists.

Illinois hasn’t played since a 74-61 loss to then-No. 5 UConn at the SentinelOne Showdown at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 28. Kylen Boswell finished with 25 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while Tomislav Ivisic posted 11 points and 10 boards. The Fighting Illini got down by double digits in the first half and trailed by as much as 21 after intermission, getting no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Tennessee’s 30-8 campaign last season ended with a loss to Houston in the Elite Eight, while Illinois lost to Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA tournament to conclude a 22-13 season. The Vols are 4-1 against the Illini with two straight wins, including a 66-64 road win on Dec. 14 last season.
