No. 20 Texas (6-2) has never managed to beat No. 9 Vanderbilt (7-1) in back-to-back meetings, but has a huge opportunity to end that drought at home on Saturday.

After beating Vanderbilt in Tennessee for the first time last year, Texas now has a chance on its hands to seal successive wins in this head-to-head in another historic first. Almost a century passed between these two teams meeting prior to their 2024 fixture, but they’re now getting well-acquainted as SEC rivals.
Saturday’s summit will take place with a single win separating the two sides, both in the league overall and in conference play. With that in mind, the Longhorns will consider this their Everest before a couple of mountainous matchups against Georgia and Arkansas, ending the season with another rivalry clash with Texas A&M.
The Commodores continue to be one of this year’s major surprise packages, powered by an experienced roster and a rare grit that head coach Clark Lea has instilled among his ranks. Texas has received criticism for a perceived lack of the latter at times this season, though it didn’t show in a 45-38 win over Mississippi State last week.
Arch Manning figured prominently in that victory but has been day-to-day to make the Vanderbilt game after going through concussion protocols. In the event the quarterback doesn’t make it, that may only open another avenue for Diego Pavia to steal the show for the Commodores in what’s already been a mesmeric campaign.
