A popular influencer has come under fire after partying while infected with a contagious illness.
U.K content creator Madeleine White headed to a rave in Orlando, Flordia, with ‘pink eye’ – better known as conjunctivitis in Australia.
On Saturday, White posted a ‘Get ready with me’ video on her TikTok, showing her 5.1 million followers how she was doing her makeup for her 30th birthday night out.
Her eyes are clearly red and puffy, and she quickly admits she had conjunctivitis but was still planning to go to the concert with “like 100,000 other people”.
Conjunctivitis is a highly contagious condition where the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye becomes inflamed, leading to redness, itchiness, and sometimes a sticky discharge.
It’s caused by infections, either viral or bacterial, and can be transmitted through close personal contact with airborne droplets or via infected surfaces or objects.
Despite this, White seemed unbothered and was determined not to let it ruin her birthday celebrations.
“I’m just going to cover it up with sparkles and a pair of sunglasses and call it a goddamn day,” she told viewers in the clip.
She claimed that she caught the condition from her husband, Andrew Fedyk, who “gave it to himself” using cheap green make-up for his Halloween costume.
“I really didn’t know that it was contagious,” she said. “I thought he got it from the make-up. I didn’t know that I could get it. I was definitely nowhere near as cautious as I should’ve been with him”.
She continues doing her make-up, adding blush to “even out the redness” and discussing which make-up brushes and products she’ll “toss” after using, even if they were brand new.
In a follow-up clip, she showed off her final look, saying, “I’m thirty, I’m flirty and I’m contagious!”
In the comment sections, dozens of people criticised White for her “selfish” decision to attend a rave with ‘pink eye’, explaining that it’s highly contagious and she risked spreading it to potentially thousands of others at the event.
“Girl, pink eye is literally VERY CONTAGIOUS, the doctors will give you days off because of this,” one person wrote.
“This is very contagious for you to be out of the house around a bunch of people,” said another.
“Hey, I really love you, Mads, but this is not okay,” a third fan wrote as someone else called her decision a “wild choice”.
She replied to some comments, saying, “In England, this is viewed as more minor than the common cold”.
“This is my first time hearing in my life you’re expected to stay home with conjunctivitis. In the UK, we wash hands, don’t touch eyes and continue as normal,” she said in another reply.
A day later, she uploaded a TikTok that she has since deleted, laughing alongside the caption: “Today I learned conjunctivitis/pink eye is treated very differently in the US than in the UK lol”.
“Back in the day, I didn’t even get a day off school for this …” she added in the caption.
Fellow Brits backed her up, with one replying: “Everyone forgets she’s English, trust me, conjunctivitis is not a huge deal here. We don’t have to stay home, we don’t get time off work, etc, so as an English person she’s doing what we would do”.
After her birthday celebrations, White shared a carousel of photos on Instagram.
One appeared to be in a cordoned-off area at the rave, possibly in the DJ booth, as her husband is one half of DJ duo Loud Luxury, who were performing.
It also included a photo where she’s closely surrounded by five of her friends before the event, even putting her arms around two of them.
“30, flirty + in bed for the foreseeable future, feeling very loved,” she captioned the post.
