Three cargo vessels have been struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operation. One ship was hit by an “unknown projectile” 50 nautical miles north-west of Dubai, a second was hit 25 miles off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, and a third was hit 11 miles north of Oman. Shipping traffic through the essential waterway has plummeted after Iran threatened to attack any vessel traveling in the area.
It comes after the U.S. said it had destroyed 16 Iranian minelaying vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, with the U.S. Central Command releasing footage showing various ships exploding after being struck with projectiles. President Donald Trump had warned Iran it would face consequences “at a level never seen before” if it placed mines in the waterway.
