In a viral TikTok video, a dog owner checks her pet cam to see what her two Labrador retrievers are doing while home alone—she’s not prepared for what the video shows.
The heartwarming clip, shared in October under the username @akpetri, shows the two pups from Iowa napping together on the couch, changing a bunch of different positions while still holding on tight to one another.
“Just the best of pals,” the caption says. “Inseparable,” as the two pups move from the couch to the rug.
While some dogs love being the only pet in the house—and sometimes even dislike being near other pups—others do feel the need to have a canine companion to spend their days with. But how do you know if that’s the case for your pup?
Before bringing a second dog home, it’s crucial that you understand whether or not your pup is ready to welcome another canine into their home.
You should first observe their behavior when they’re around other dogs. Experts suggest taking your pup to the dog park and carefully watching how they interact with other canines. If they like being around them and show interest in them, then the answer is probably yes.
If they instead lunge and bark at the dogs, or if they actively try to avoid hanging out with other pups, then your dog is probably not ready to welcome another canine in their home yet or at all. If they attend daycare you can also ask the staff how they behave around dogs and which breeds they tend to hang around the most.
When getting a second dog, make sure that their energy levels and play style are a match. Avoid getting bigger dogs, which could make them feel threatened. It is also best to choose pups of the opposite gender to avoid competition.
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 147,400 views and 22,300 likes on the platform.
One user, Zach Rosauer, commented: “So, I need a second dog is what you’re saying…”
