The Tigers’ top target, Lane Kiffin, is set to coach the final game of the regular season for Ole Miss on Friday. Following the No. 7 Rebels’ contest against Mississippi State in the “Egg Bowl” on Friday, Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter is expected to announce Kiffin’s future on Saturday.
Fan bases of Ole Miss, Florida, and LSU are holding their breath.
While attempting to outbid Florida and Ole Miss for Kiffin, LSU doesn’t appear to be casting a super wide net for its national coaching search. Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz is considered to be one of a few backup options for the Tigers.
However, it doesn’t appear Drinkwitz will be under consideration for the job in Baton Rouge soon.
Per Frank Cusumano of KSDK, Mizzou approved a six-year contract extension for Drinkwitz. While the head coach has not yet signed the new deal, he’s expected to in the near future.
“The Missouri Board of Curators approved the extension for Coach Drinkwitz,” Cusumano posted on X. “It puts it at 6 years. If he meets incentives, years added. It’s a raise for Drink and his staff will be a top 4 highest paid staff in the SEC. Not signed yet, but likely very soon.”
Missouri is set to finish the regular season by traveling to play the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday. Drinkwitz, 42, is 45-28 overall and 25-24 in SEC play during his six seasons with Mizzou.
If Kiffin does not choose LSU, the program might have to dig a little deeper for its coaching search.
On Friday, the Tigers appeared to finalize their buyout plan for former head coach Brian Kelly, clearing one major obstacle before naming their next head coach. Now, LSU needs to find someone who will take the prestigious job.
