The Kansas City Chiefs fell to 6-7 on the season last Sunday night, losing 20-10 to the Houston Texans. The loss officially eliminated them from contention for the AFC West division title and left them firmly on the outside of the playoff picture.
Under Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, the Chiefs have never lost the division and have always advanced to the AFC Championship Game or beyond—standards that are now either out of reach or severely diminished unless Kansas City wins out and receives significant help.
This situation likely sets the stage for an offseason full of uncertainty, some of which could involve longtime head coach Andy Reid, who will turn 68 next spring.
While Kansas City has no plans to fire Reid, he could choose to leave on his own terms, which is something he’s considered in the past. However, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Reid’s retirement after this season seems unlikely. Having signed a contract extension in 2024 that runs through 2029, he doesn’t appear ready to hang it up anytime soon.
“Andy Reid turns 68 next spring, and retirement chatter has swirled around him before, but the contract extension he received indicates he’s not interested in hanging it up anytime soon,” Graziano reported. “Especially given how disappointing this season has been for the Chiefs.”

Reid took the Chiefs job back in 2013 and has built them into a modern-day dynasty—one that is now facing serious adversity for the first time.
During his tenure in Kansas City, Reid has guided the team to five Super Bowls, winning three Lombardi Trophies. He also arrived the same year the Chiefs drafted veteran tight end Travis Kelce, who is now entering a critical offseason himself, with his contract up and the possibility of retirement after 13 seasons in the NFL.
