A surfer is in hospital after his board was bitten by a shark on the NSW Mid North Coast.

The incident took place about 10am at Point Plomer Beach in Limeburners Creek National Park, north of Port Macquarie.

Beaches have been closed between Town Beach in Port Macquarie and Crescent Head.

A 39-year-old man is in a stable condition at Kempsey Hospital after self presenting with a shark bite, a spokeswoman for the local health district said.

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steve Pearce said surfers reported multiple sharks in the water.

“A male surfer had an interaction with a bull shark and has been knocked off his board. His board has been bitten,” Pearce told 2GB on Tuesday morning.

The man is understood to have minor injuries including grazes.

“He is extremely fortunate, it’s a really isolated area up there,” Pearce said.
