A man who woke up late and was rushing to work tried to treat himself to a sweet treat on the way, only to have his morning “ruined.”
Thomas S, 24, played the dangerous game of repeatedly snoozing his alarm on a recent workday was risking being late to his job.
Out of time to make breakfast at home, he stopped at a small bakery and grabbed a coffee and what he thought was a chocolate croissant. But, as he told Newsweek, when he got to work “I took a bite and the croissant felt cheesy.”
He went on: “I was confused as I looked at it,” and then he realized “ham was in the croissant.”
Thomas shared the incident to Reddit’s r/mildlyinfuriating sub via his account, u/Innocentman1, where he shared photos. He captioned the post: “I wanted to start my morning with a warm coffee and a chocolate croissant, aaaand it’s ruined.”
The first photo showed a croissant with chocolate sauce swirled across it, but the second showed the inside after Thomas had taken a bite—and sure enough, a thin slice of ham was folded up within the pastry.
His post proved popular on the site, with over 24,000 upvotes. Other users shared their own stories, with one commenting: “This would consistently happen at the bakery near my uni. Like 8/10 times the chocolate croissant would be with ham and cheese.”
Another user admitted they’d be willing to give the strange mix a go, writing: “I have never seen a ham, cheese, and chocolate croissant before. While this one doesn’t look too appealing, that combo sounds pretty good.”
Another joked: “It’s breakfast and dessert, all rolled into one.”
While Thomas was annoyed at having “nothing to eat for breakfast,” things could have been worse. He told Newsweek that he had called a friend who is Muslim to ask if he wanted anything from the bakery, and “thankfully” he said no.
Some religions, such as Islam and Judaism, prohibit eating pork. May people also adhere to a vegan or vegetarian diet. In 2024, the value of the worldwide vegan food market was $27.8 billion, up from $24.58 billion in 2023, according to Statista.
Thomas, who lives in Bavaria, Germany, didn’t name the bakery, which he described as a “private family business.” But he complained to the business and received a coffee, muffins and a sandwich for free, as well as an apology.
So in the end, “today was a good day—got my chocolate muffins, free coffee and a chicken sandwich,” he said. “They explained to me that [the] croissants they make were not marked accurately that day, so the worker who was making them was confused.”
He added: “I’m normally a nice guy who is not rage complaining about the food problems, but I feel bad for the person who made them, and I told the owner to be nice to her.
“Mistakes do indeed happen in life,” he said.
