A man has died after being hit by a light rail carriage in inner Sydney, with services suspended as police investigate the incident.

Emergency services were called to Devonshire Street in Surry Hills about 1.15pm on Thursday following reports the pedestrian in his 40s had been struck.

Paramedics attempted to treat the man however he died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

With multiple firefighters, paramedics, and a forensics team at the scene, the light rail stop has been closed off with police tape to prevent members of the public from entering.

NSW Police have set up a forensics tent and are transporting evidence in brown paper bags.

Light rail services are not running between Moore Park and Circular Quay in both directions, and passengers need to find an alternative or delay their travel.

L2 and L3 light rail services are running between Moore Park and Randwick, and between Moore Park and Juniors Kingsford.

A limited number of replacement buses are running between Central and Moore Park, and there are supplement light rail services between Moore Park, Randwick and Juniors Kingsford.
