Fans are weighing in on Megyn Kelly resurfacing a quote from Savannah Guthrie’s book about “kidnapping” amid the disappearance of her mom, Nancy Guthrie.

“This woman — I don’t know — flagged that Savannah’s book, which was released in February of 2024, discussed a game she used to play as a kid with her cousin, and it was a kidnapping game involving Nancy,” Kelly, 55, said in a Tuesday, February 17, Instagram clip from her The Megyn Kelly Show account.

Kelly explained that they pulled audio from Savannah’s book Mostly What God Does, where the Today coanchor discussed her cousin Teri, who she said was “like an aunt to her growing up.” Kelly claimed that Teri is 20 years older than Savannah, 54.

“About once a year, in the summertime, my cousin Teri orchestrated a kidnapping of my sister and me,” Savannah said in the clip. “It went down like this: The cousins would visit for a few days at our house in Tucson. And then, on the morning they were to leave, Teri would wake us up early, shushing us in the predawn darkness as we made our escape. We would all pile into her rickety station wagon and head north. The sky streaking with bright oranges and bright pinks as the sun rose over the colorless desert landscape.”

Savannah recalled that Teri would let her and sister Annie Guthrie call their home on a pay phone “somewhere between Phoenix and Tucson.” (Nancy, 84, shared daughters Savannah and Annie and son Camron with late husband Charles Guthrie, who died in 1988 after a heart attack.)

“‘Mom, cousin Teri kidnapped us to take us to her house,’” Savannah remembered of calling Nancy. “My mother would feign shock, protest how terribly she would miss us and assure us she would drive up to retrieve us in a few days.”

In the comments section, several users addressed the clip.

“Megyn!! do you or your staff read your comments? Stop with this already. We are also fatigued by it. Please do better!” one user wrote, while another added, “Y’all are making something out of nothing. It was a silly game and obviously the Mom and Aunt knew the Aunt was taking the girls to her house. It was a surprise and something fun at that time. Yes the choice of word for the game is ironic and now in our days in poor choice.”

A third stated, “That’s totally innocent. It was a joke. She probably already told the mom, and she knew and they were just playing along.”

News broke on February 1 that Nancy was reported missing by a family member who called 911. She was last seen one day prior by daughter Annie. Savannah, meanwhile, has been absent from the Today show but has released several statements via social media alongside her siblings.

In the days since Nancy’s appearance, the FBI released black-and-white images of a masked person captured on camera outside of her home in Arizona. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told NBC News on Tuesday, February 17, that it appears the person — who has since been described as likely a male with an average build — appeared to be wearing a ring underneath the pair of black gloves.

“I look at the same photo you look at and I get — I see it,” Nanos said. “I’m going to give that to my team. They’ll look at that. They’ll analyze it and we’ll see. Maybe, maybe it is.”

In a statement on Monday, February 16, Nanos confirmed that Savannah and her family members have been ruled out as possible suspects in the case.

“Not one single person in the family is a suspect,” he told Tucson outlet KOLD 13 News. “So I am telling everyone, effective today, you guys [media] need to knock it off, quit. People are hurting. They are victims. I am saying they are clear. We have cleared them.”

Nanos further confirmed that authorities are investigating the gun holster that the person appeared to be wearing on their belt.

“We know he had a gun. We know he had a holster that had some pretty unique characteristics,” Nanos said. “We can’t quite identify it yet, but that’s being worked on. So naturally, we go to our gun shops everywhere and say: ‘Have you seen this guy? Can you help us identify this weapon? Can you help us identify this holster?’”
