An allegedly stolen car crashed on Brisbane’s Story Bridge on Friday afternoon, bringing traffic to a standstill.
A 31-year-old man is accused of stealing a car from a business in Eight Mile Plains and crashing it at Kangaroo Point, then carjacking another vehicle from a woman and crashing it moments later.
The Woolloongabba man allegedly stole a black Toyota Yaris from the Logan Road business about 11pm on Thursday.
The Yaris was seen being driven dangerously in Toowong, Greenslopes and Brisbane’s CBD before crashing on MacDonald Street in Kangaroo Point about 3pm on Friday, police allege.
The man then allegedly approached a red Toyota Corolla on Main Street in Kangaroo Point about 3.10pm and forcibly removed a 43-year-old Mango Hill woman from the car.
Police allege he fled in this vehicle and was seen driving erratically on the Story Bridge before hitting multiple vehicles and rolling the Corolla onto its side.
Northbound lanes of the Story Bridge were closed for over an hour, only reopening about 4.20pm.
Paramedics assessed two people.
The alleged carjacker was detained by police and taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for minor injuries.
He has since been charged with two counts each of unlawful use of a vehicle, driving without a licence, dangerous operation of a vehicle while affected by an intoxicating substance, and one count of armed robbery involving violence.
He is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday.
Traffic remained congested for some time, and drivers were urged to avoid the area.
The crash occurred during school pick-up, and students at All Hallows School were moved to a classroom as a result. Parents were advised to contact their daughters on their mobile phones so teachers could send them back outside to waiting cars.
