Queensland’s early winter cold-snap is in its final days, the weather bureau says, after Brisbanites were somewhat shocked by the onset of below-average temperatures last week.

This morning, temperatures dropped below zero south-west of Brisbane. Applethorpe and Stanthorpe hit minus 3.4 degrees as the sun came up, while Warwick dropped to minus 2.6 degrees.

In Brisbane, it was slightly warmer, but still a rather chilly 9.2 degrees.

Queenslanders have been feeling the cold.

Brisbanites shivered through their coldest June morning in 23 years on Friday when the temperature fell to 5.2 degrees.

“It’s all thanks to a cold front that went through southern parts of Australia … and it takes a couple of days for that cold air to move all the way north,” said Helen Reid, senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology.

“We’ve had really frosty mornings through so much of Queensland, not just southern Queensland, but through central and northern locations as well.”

She said the mornings were expected to warm up from tomorrow.

“The forecast for the Brisbane region is to have those morning temperatures a bit closer to the double figures,” Reid said.

“We’re looking at ‘back to normal’ even tomorrow.”
