Rumors have begun to swirl regarding Deion Sanders’ future with the Colorado Buffaloes as they sit at 3-7 heading into a Week 12 game against Arizona State. On Thursday, further fuel was added to the fire after the man who hired Sanders, Colorado AD Rick George, decided to step away from his position.

George, who has been Colorado’s athletic director for the past 13 years, issued a statement released by the team on Thursday announcing that he will be stepping down as AD. He will still have a big role within the program, as he will move to a role as a special advisor to the chancellor.

In his statement, George reaffirmed his support for Sanders and the Buffaloes football team, outlining how his announcement was timed specifically to highlight this support for the program.

“I wanted to make this announcement now in order to give Chancellor Schwartz plenty of time to find the right person for Colorado, and I look forward to doing everything I can to ensure a smooth transition,” said George. “I also wanted to time my announcement so that I could support Coach Prime and our football team this season, which I’m looking forward to continuing in my new role.”

It’s certainly a great sign for Sanders that George will remain involved within the inner workings of the football program.

However, there is one fairly obvious question that will remain until we know who George’s replacement ultimately is. Does the next AD of the Buffaloes believe in Sanders as the head coach as much as George did?

The other scenario following this news is that Sanders may end up leaving Colorado on his own volition if he doesn’t align with whoever the new athletic director ends up being.

Sanders has notably been linked to his alma mater, Florida State, amid rumors that Mike Norvell may be relieved of his duties. Additionally, other wild rumors have emerged tying the Hall of Fame cornerback to an NFL job with the Cleveland Browns coaching his son, Shedeur Sanders.

There sure seem to be several options on the table for Coach Prime after the 2025 college football season. So it will surely be interesting to see who the next athletic director is, and whether that ends up impacting Sanders’ future in Boulder.
