Earlier this week, news broke that former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh would become the new head coach of the New York Giants.
Baltimore fired Harbaugh, a Super Bowl-winning head coach, after 18 seasons. The move came after a disappointing season-ending loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers that left the team out of the postseason.
This week, various reports suggested he’d sign a lucrative $100 million deal to coach the Giants for five years. Many began reporting that it was a significant swing and successful move for the Giants franchise, which has struggled throughout recent seasons but now seems to have considerable talent on its roster.
However, as of Friday, the Giants had yet to finalize a deal with Harbaugh to make him their next head coach. NFL insiders, including NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, recently addressed why the deal still isn’t done between the two sides.

During a recent episode of “The Insiders,” Rapoport said the Harbaugh-Giants deal is still “expected to get done,” but “they have spent the better part of the past 48 hours trying to figure this out.”
He indicated that this tends to happen when there is news of a deal like this before it’s official, and that both sides have leverage, since both Harbaugh and the Giants would benefit from the deal happening.
While Rapoport said it doesn’t seem the deal is hitting snags about money, it seems to be more about “reporting structure and who is able to do what and how the whole organization is set up.”
Rapoport said it also hasn’t been “smooth sailing” since those things he mentioned usually happen in the lead-up interview and in talks to ink the deal. He believes something may have been “lost in translation” on either Harbaugh’s or the Giants’ side.
As mentioned, the expectation is still that the two sides will reach a deal. According to Rapoport’s colleague Mike Garafolo, they may finalize a deal either on Friday evening or sometime on Saturday, and then announce a press conference to introduce Harbaugh as the new head coach.
According to Rapoport, the Harbaugh deal is still holding things up for “the entire coaching cycle” because other teams are interested in Harbaugh as their head coach, and other coaches are looking to fill vacancies around the league.
That includes Kevin Stefanski, who is considered another top choice by many NFL teams. In addition, the Tennessee Titans are interested in hiring Harbaugh as their head coach, along with others.
After the season ended, other teams looking to find new head coaches include the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Oakland Raiders.
