The top achiever in the state’s visual arts course, Jessica Ellis from Wenona School in North Sydney, has achieved full marks for her work in the course.
Jessica, currently travelling in Amsterdam, was told she received 100 out of 100 on both her exam and her major work. It was years of hard work – but she told us she doesn’t regret a thing.
“The most important factor in my decision [to study visual arts] was the knowledge that if I didn’t pursue art academically, it would be deprioritised during my busy and stressful HSC year, and it was important to me to stay creative during this time,” she said.

“I was initially a little apprehensive about my choice to pursue four major works (art, textiles, english extension 2, history extension) but in hindsight I have no regrets. The experience taught me invaluable lessons in time management and personal discipline – and not to trust those who declared ‘you’ll die!’ when I told them about my proposed workload.”
Her work, Becoming, ”captures a sense of nostalgia for the present,” she said. She made portraits that were “relics of a time when everything felt possible, and dressing up wasn’t about clothes, but about becoming”.
