Residents of Halls Gap, a town at the foot of the Grampians, were told to evacuate on Saturday, with authorities advising locals not to return.
Will Hudson, who lives in Halls Gap, evacuated to Stawell this morning after securing his properties.
“Most people have evacuated, which has been good to see,” said Hudson. “It’s just a lot of unknown and uncertainty, not knowing what the weather will do.”
Although quietly hopeful the fire might avoid the main town, Hudson said it remained “unpredictable changes, so we wait and see what happens.”
Hudson has spent several years with the CFA and has lived in the area for about four decades. He said he never underestimates fires after “a few close calls.”
“Which is why I left … you can make educated guesses, and then there’s always an element unknown that you have to be wary of.”
