Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes really wanted to switch up his look after the football season came to a close. Thanks to his barber, however, he didn’t go overboard.

Mahomes’ fresh fade made its official Instagram debut in a joint post with his wife, Brittany Mahomes, in honor of their daughter Sterling’s 4th birthday earlier this month. The image was shocking to many fans, who have grown used to seeing Mahomes with a curly mohawk.

“The whole time that I’ve been cutting his hair, he just lets me do what I do,” barber DeJuan Bonds told Us Weekly in an interview published on Tuesday, February 25. “But when he asked for a change, he basically was like, ‘Just cut me all off,'” he explained.

However, Bonds was quick to talk Patrick, 29, down, not letting him completely shave off his signature mohawk.

“I was like, ‘No, no, no. We’re not just going to cut it all off. We’re actually going to collab on this and go a little bit at a time, take it a little bit down. We kind of came to a common ground like, ‘OK, this is the cut, this is the cut, this is the length.’ It was a collaboration on this last one,” he admitted.

Patrick and his team lost the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX on February 9, effectively ending their Super Bowl win streak. This gave Mahomes the go ahead to change up his hairstyle without worrying about a potential jinx.

After Patrick’s new ‘do made its way across social media earlier this month, comments started pouring in — some positive, and others not so much.

Bonds admits that he’s “not surprised” by the comments that the NFL star’s hair has received.

“A lot of people have mixed reviews about his hair and how they wanted him to cut it off or how they wanted him to keep it,” Bonds told Us Weekly.
