Thanks to a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, the Philadelphia Eagles have helped Carson Wentz land another job in the NFL.
On Sunday, it was reported that the Eagles and the Vikings have agreed to a deal, which sends the quarterback Sam Howell to the Eagles in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2026 and a seventh-round pick in 2027. Along with Howell, the Eagles will land a sixth-round pick for the 2026 NFL Draft.
The move gets done not long after the Eagles’ backup Tanner McKee suffered a setback. In case he’s not ready to back up Jalen Hurts in Week 1, Howell will have some time to learn the playbook and the system.
via @Rapsheet: Trade! The #Vikings are trading QB Sam Howell to the #Eagles, per me and @TomPelissero. It’s a 5th in 2026 and 7th in 2027 to MIN, while PHI Howell and 6th in 2026. Minnesota, which recently hosted Carson Wentz on a visit, now has a QB opening. And Philly gets more QB depth.

The Vikings’ backup plan includes adding former Eagles star Carson Wentz. The veteran quarterback is expected to play backup to the emerging star, JJ McCarthy.
Wentz, a 32-year-old NFL veteran, was once viewed as the franchise quarterback in Philadelphia. Despite coming from a small school in North Dakota, Wentz was viewed as a top-two prospect heading into the 2016 NFL Draft. After Jared Goff went No. 1 to the LA Rams, the Eagles picked up Wentz with the second pick.
During a five-year run with the Eagles, Wentz appeared in 68 games. He totaled 16,811 yards, 113 touchdowns, and 50 interceptions. As a starter, Wentz achieved a 35-32-1 record with the Eagles. During his 2020 season, he was benched for Jalen Hurts after appearing in 12 games.
Following Wentz’s Eagles tenure, he had a run as a starter with the Indianapolis Colts. After going 9-8 in Indianapolis, Wentz joined the Washington Commanders for the 2022 NFL season. His starting campaign would last seven games. He was benched after a 2-5 start.
Since his time in Washington, Wentz has spent time with the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, he’s set to join the Vikings for his 10th NFL season.
Meanwhile, the Eagles pick up the former fifth-rounder out of North Carolina. Howell has been in the NFL since 2022. He started his career with the Commanders. Since then, he’s had a run with the Seattle Seahawks and the Vikings. At this stage of his career, Howell has started 18 of the 20 games he played. Before the Commanders landed Jayden Daniels, Howell started 17 games for Washington. He totaled 3,946 yards, while throwing 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
