Four children have been injured — including one who is in life-threatening condition — after a crash in Mississauga, Ont., which police believe may have come on the heels of an incident at a local gym, followed by a car chase.

Around 3:50 p.m. on Thursday, Peel Regional Police went to a gym at Highway 403 and Winston Churchill Boulevard to investigate a reported armed carjacking. Ten minutes later, they were called to Ninth Line and Candelight Drive to respond to a collision between two vehicles with injuries to four children and one adult.

Police said two suspects fled the car crash on foot — which investigators believe is somehow linked to the incident at the gym.

Speaking near the scene on Thursday evening, Const. Tyler Bell said police had subsequently ruled out that a carjacking took place, but believed there may have been an altercation between drivers at the gym.

He said officers were investigating the possibility that multiple vehicles had followed a Black Range Rover from the first incident at the gym, leading up to the crash, which images show involved the Range Rover.

Bell said five people were injured in the crash, including four children between nine and 12 years old. Three of the children were in stable condition by Thursday evening; one of the children and the driver were in critical, life-threatening condition.

Two suspects were seen fleeing the wreckage of the Black Range Rover, Bell said. They’re described as young men — one wearing dark clothing and black shorts, the other with a white t-short and dark pants.

Police stressed their investigation was in its infancy, with reports a firearm was involved in the carjacking. The possibility of a weapon is something police are still considering. Bell asked anyone who finds a firearm in their garden not to touch it and it call the police immediately.

Ninth Line was closed in both directions between Candlelight and Janice drives.
