The new “Predator: Badlands” film is a new take on the famous alien hunters that seek the greatest challenge, and it comes from director Dan Trachtenberg, who also directed the fan-favorite movies “Prey” and the hit animated feature, “Predator: Killer of Killers.”
All three of Trachtenberg’s films in the “Predator” universe have featured new takes on the hugely popular franchise, including the Predators facing off against the Comanchee Nation, and more recently the Vikings, a WWII pilot, and more.
With Trachtenberg returning to direct his third film in the “Predator” franchise, early reviews for his latest feature are all leaning one way.
IGN gave “Predator: Badlands” an 8/10, stating, “Predator: Badlands is getting an 8. Dan Trachtenberg is heading in an interesting direction with this franchise and he gets bonus points for that. The Predator as a mysterious murder monster is getting some of his backstory filled in, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Badlands, in shifting the perspective to a Yautja main character, actually highlights what’s been great about this franchise in its better moments. Dek and Thia are an unexpectedly fun pairing that bring a new energy to the franchise and an altogether different kind of hunt. It might not be pulling the skull and spine out of us and screaming in bloody victory, but it gets close.”
The Wrap writes, “Predator: Badlands” rewrites the rules of the #Predator franchise with exhilarating, futuristic action and, more importantly, depth and character to spare.”
#PredatorBadlands is a film which I was excited for and was hoping it exceeded my expectations. Thankfully, this franchise is in good hands. Despite a PG rating, the violence is there and still just as entertaining if it was R-Rated. Loved the character development and appreciate how we humanise Dek. Something fresh and relevant,” Tayyib wrote on X.
“#PredatorBadlands is absolute PEAK. The best Predator yet. It empathizes with the Predator and offers an action-packed ride with gorgeous visuals. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and Elle Fanning are the perfect buddy duo. It builds the world and has so much fun,” Jonathan Sim says.
“PREDATOR: BADLANDS is one of the more surprising action blockbusters I’ve seen this year. Granted, I went in with low expectations, but I found Dan Trachtenberg’s latest installment in the revived “Predator” franchise to be a relentlessly paced, adrenaline-pumping spectacle of rage-fueled violence, immersive world-building, and a simple yet gripping story of what true strength actually is. Elle Fanning brings much-needed warmth and humor to the otherwise grimly intense prequel, delivering standout work in dual roles. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi also tackles two characters with commanding rage and badass physicality. The seamless blend of makeup and visual effects work is terrific, and when paired with the thunderous soundscape and plenty of eye-catching visuals, it makes for a thrilling entry worthy of the big screen,” Matt Neglia wrote.
