Health authorities fear an outbreak of measles in north Queensland could spread to other parts of the state as families travel during the September school holidays.

Queensland Health issued its first measles alert for Townsville on September 11, warning the infected person had spent nearly two weeks visiting public places while unknowingly infected.

Last week, alerts were issued for Mackay, four hours south of Townsville, and the Gold Coast.

On Sunday, Queensland Health confirmed an earlier outbreak in Cairns was continuing, with a total of 12 cases identified since September 1.

Initial symptoms can include lethargy, a runny nose, moist cough and sore red eyes, followed by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body.
