Randy Orton has publicly addressed his absence from John Cena’s final WWE match, sharing a heartfelt tribute to his longtime rival and friend. Cena’s historic career concluded this past weekend at “Saturday Night’s Main Event” in Washington, D.C., where he was defeated by Gunther in a highly emotional retirement bout.

While many WWE legends and peers were present to witness the moment, Orton was notably missing from the Capital One Arena. taking to social media, “The Viper” explained that his absence was due to professional commitments in Saudi Arabia, where he was promoting the upcoming “Royal Rumble” event in Riyadh.

“I broke into the wrestling business and grew up for the past 2 decades alongside @johncena I wrestled with or against him 100 times, at least. I would have enjoyed being there in DC for #wwe #snme and witness his emotional send off into retirement. But I know if ANYONE understands my absence, it’s John, because I was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia #KSA promoting #riyadhseason and #royalrumble,” Orton wrote.

Despite the physical distance, Orton revealed that he and Cena were in contact leading up to the match. He shared that they exchanged text messages on the morning of the event, expressing his gratitude for having the chance to connect with Cena on such a pivotal day.

“The morning of his retirement we exchanged a few texts, and I was honored to speak with him on such a big day. I look forward to following John’s career in Hollywood AND beyond. Skys the limit with this guy. An inspiration not only to generations of fans, but to myself, who was lucky enough to learn firsthand from one of the most OVER wrestlers ever. Thanks for being so good to my family over the years and thanks for making the lockeroom a better place. Take care John, and I’ll see ya around,” Orton said.

The rivalry between Orton and Cena defined a generation of WWE programming. The two superstars battled over the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships on numerous occasions, with their feuds peaking in 2009 and 2014. Their storied history culminated earlier this year at “Backlash,” where they faced off one final time. In that encounter, Cena emerged victorious, defeating Orton to close the book on their legendary in-ring saga.

Orton is now set to return to action as the build to the “Royal Rumble” intensifies. He recently confirmed his participation in the January 31 event, which will be the first “Big Four” Premium Live Event held outside of North America.
