When it comes to young NFL quarterbacks, one thing they want to avoid is the infamous “sophomore slump.” Heading into the 2025 season, Washington Commanders star Jayden Daniels will be the latest sensation to try and not take a step backward in year two.
In 2024, Daniels took the league by storm after being drafted second overall by the Commanders. His dynamic combination of speed and running ability made him tough to contain for opposing defenses. The end result was Daniels leading Washington on a deep run that ended with an appearance in the NFC Championship game.
This time around, things will be much different for Daniels. After putting together a strong rookie campaign, he has big expectations to meet. Despite the long list of QBs to regress in their second year, many expect the Commanders star to remain on his upward trajectory.
During a recent interview with Card Player, longtime NFL quarterback Rex Grossman was asked his thoughts on Daniels heading into the 2025 season. He confidently stated that regression isn’t in the cards for the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year.
“I don’t see (regression). The best thing that he’s got going for him is his throwing ability,” Grossman said. “He’s got a strong arm, he’s accurate and he’s got touch. He’s got the full package in throwing the ball. And it seems like he understands the game pretty well. He doesn’t need to rely on running, but man, if, if you don’t contain him, he’s gone. I expect him to have a great year and, if he just repeats what he did last year, it’ll be a great year.”
While he’s most known for his time with the Chicago Bears, Grossman’s NFL journey did lead him to Washington. He ended his playing career there, suiting up in 17 games across two seasons. During his tenure with the franchise, he posted a 6-10 record while throwing for 4,035 yards and 23 touchdowns.
As he prepares for his second season in the pros, the Commanders have done their part to help Daniels keep blossoming into a superstar. They’ve bolstered the offensive weapons at his disposal by trading for Deebo Samuel. As long as the front office works things out with Terry McLaurin, Daniels will have arguably one of the top receiver duos around him.
Daniels has won over many people in the football world with his strong play, but only time will tell if he can live up to the bar being set for him in 2025 and beyond.
