Robert Pattinson was only 22 years old when the first Twilight movie premiered in 2008 — and he still deals with haters nearly 17 years later.
In an interview with GQ Spain published on Tuesday, January 21, the actor, now 38, expressed how he feels about people who still feel the need to tell him how they feel about the film nearly two decades later.
“I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, Twilight ruined the vampire genre.’ Are you still stuck on that s**t?” Pattinson told the outlet and went on to ask, “How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago?” He then finished his thought and added, “It’s crazy.” (Quotes are translated from Spanish.)
The London-born star played the 104-year-old vampire Edward Cullen in the franchise based on Stephenie Meyer’s popular book series. The Twilight saga concluded in November 2012 with the fifth and final movie, Breaking Dawn – Part 2. The movie’s reception was panned by critics, but the franchise maintains a strong cult following. Many fans have even taken trips to Forks, Washington, the town where the story takes place, even though most of the movies were filmed in Oregon.
Pattinson has been vocal about his thoughts on the movies and his time playing Edward in the past. In 2019, he admitted that he thought it was a “weird story” and that “even when [he] was promoting it, [he] was pretty open about how strange [he] thought it was when [he] was doing it,” in an interview with Variety. But his latest statements about the franchise seemingly indicate that he’s left all that in the past.
The actor, who plays Bruce Wayne — the Gotham City billionaire playboy by day and caped vigilante by night, also known as Batman — in the latest live-action iteration of the DC Comics character, is set to return for The Batman: Part II. The long-awaited sequel to the 2022 reboot, which was originally expected to premiere in October 2025, has since been delayed multiple times, and fans can now expect to see Pattinson wear the cape and cowl in October 2027.
