The San Francisco 49ers are going to be one of the most interesting teams to keep an eye on early in the 2025 NFL season.
After making a run to the Super Bowl just two years ago, the 49ers missed the playoffs in 2024. They dealt with a lot of injury issues throughout the year and it ended in a major disappointment.
Entering the 2025 campaign, San Francisco seems to be much healthier. However, there was a lot of roster movement that impacted the team this offseason.
Specifically at the wide receiver position, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered. Deebo Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders this offseason and Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from the torn ACL that he suffered last year.
Packers’ Potential Micah Parsons Trade Package Surfaces in Blockbuster Idea
To help address the situation, the 49ers have signed veteran wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling. They might not be done addition to the wide receiver room.
John Lynch, the team’s general manager, honestly opened up about the fact that San Francisco is having conversations about veteran free agent wideout Kendrick Bourne. He was released recently by the New England Patriots.
“No new news,” Lynch said. “Anytime a really good football player who we had ties to — Kendrick started his career here — becomes available, there’s obviously going to be discussions. We’re trying to evaluate the pertinent information. Kendrick has been hurt in training camp, so trying to see where he’s exactly at. Having conversations. We’ll let that play out, we’ll continue to look into it”
Adding Bourne would make a lot of sense for the 49ers. If he’s able to get back to full health and stay healthy, he could be a consistent option for Brock Purdy to utilize.
Last season with the Patriots, Bourne struggled with injuries and also never earned a consistent role. He played in 12 games, but only caught 28 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown. Back in 2023, he appeared in eight games and caught 37 passes for 406 yards and four scores.
Steelers QB Will Howard Receives Bad News Before Week 1
It’s possible that San Francisco could sign Bourne. Lynch isn’t committing to that, but he’s certainly making it clear that he’s open to the idea.
Expect to hear more about Bourne’s next chapter in the near future. Whether that’s with the 49ers or somewhere else, he’ll get another opportunity soon.
