The Pittsburgh Steelers have an unclear future at the quarterback position with Aaron Rodgers potentially playing in the final season of his legendary NFL career.

Rodgers has hinted at potentially coming back for another season, but before the year began he noted that this would likely be his last. If he does choose to retire at the end of this season, the Steelers will need to find a new starting quarterback.

It’s possible that Pittsburgh could consider making a move for a new signal caller in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Steelers could also consider pursuing a quarterback in free agency or the trade market.

Browns Insider Sounds Alarm on Shedeur Sanders’ Future

With that being said, an interesting trade target has been brought up for Pittsburgh.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano has named the Steelers as one of the potential suitors for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones this offseason. He also suggested the Indianapolis Colts as another landing spot.

“There are plenty of teams with unsettled 2026 quarterback situations (Colts? Steelers?) that could look to a 27-year-old former first-round pick who has been through the Kyle Shanahan career rehab program as part of their potential solution,” Graziano wrote.

Jones stepped in and played very well in Brock Purdy’s absence this season for the 49ers. He likely earned himself another starting opportunity with another team either in 2026 or as a free agent in 2027.

So far this season, Jones has played in 10 total games. He has completed 69.6 percent of his pass attempts for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

At 27 years old, Jones still has time to be a long-term franchise quarterback for a team. Pittsburgh could make perfect sense as a landing spot. He could be the guy that leads the Steelers into the foreseeable future.

No one knows what kind of price tag San Francisco would have on Jones if he is even placed on the trade market. Having such a quality backup behind Purdy might be something that the 49ers don’t want to part with.

However, if Jones is placed on the trade market, it would make a lot of sense for Pittsburgh to show interest if Rodgers chooses to ride off into the sunset of retirement.
